It was a rainy day when
Marco Polo and his uncle
finally arrived home from
China. None of the people at the big “piazza” could recognize them. No one
could believe that these strangely dressed men with long beards could be the
Polo men. It had been so long ago that they had left Venice; no news had ever
come from them. So, even their family was sure they were dead.
After proving their
identity Marco began narrating his experiences. From him people in Venice heard
about extremely large nuts, which we call coconuts, aboutleaves people boiled
in water and drank, which we call tea, about dishes of ice covered with fruit,
among other things. It’s because of Marco Polo’s travels that people
in Italy began eating ices
until they were able to prepare ice cream as we know it now. News traveled fast
from Italy to France, then to England and finally to America.
In the late 1700’s
GeorgeWashington was the first
American to buy a machine
for making ice cream.
Today you can continue to
make it at home but it can also be bought at stores and supermarkets. Although
ice cream is most often eaten for its delicious taste, it is also known to be a
healthy although fattening food.
